Moving… You would be surprised just how many variables there are in a single move. And to make matters worse, if you mess up one of them – you get to mess up the entire move. Yep, simple as that. We are not saying that to stress you out more than you already are. We are saying this to help you not take moving lightly because the moment you do – you are in trouble. There is a very long list of tricks you can use to make your move a simple one. And the list grows with each day. One of the unavoidable items on that list is the creation of a moving inventory list. The more we are in the business of moving the more we realize just how much writing things down helps. The fact is – the more things you need to remember, the more things you end up forgetting. However, if it’s written down the chances of you forgetting something are slim to none.
The moving inventory list
This is why we are talking about a moving inventory list. The number of times we heard someone either losing one of their belongings or having to dig through a mountain of boxes to get it… Oh boy. And this is something that can easily happen to you too. The larger the move – the bigger the odds of this catching you off-guard.
Just imagine getting to your new home and wanting to grab a few necessities, all to discover that it is in one of the 70 boxes in the room… Ugh, looking for it might take all night…
This is easily avoidable by making a moving inventory list. The list can take numerous shapes, but it comes down to writing down what is what, and where it is. There are several ways you can go about doing this, and we will try to cover the simplest ones.
Plan everything out
The most important thing you can do to help yourself with any move is to plan everything ahead of time. The more time you have to plan, the better the move will be. And this does not go only for packing and unpacking, but it works for all elements of the move:
- Finding a moving company
- Transportation of your belongings
- Finding storage solutions (if needed)
- Unloading the trucks

Still, we are focusing on creating a moving inventory list. And in order to do so there are several things you ought to do.
Make a pre-packing plan
This means that you should take your time before packing and list everything that you own. Luckily, today we have smartphones with cameras and the process becomes that much easier.
Grab your nifty little smartphone and start taking pictures or videos, whichever is more convenient. Try to capture everything that you might move. It may sound tedious, but in the end, it could be a lifesaver. Try to capture any serial numbers of items that have such a thing, and keep them in a photograph format. This is especially useful when claiming any type of insurance on items that got either damaged or lost.
After you have documented everything, you can group items that will go with one another. Clothing with clothing, electronics with electronics, etc. Furthermore, once you form the piles themselves, make sure to take pictures of the piles themselves, as a bundle.
Make sure that all the most valuable items you have are sorted on a separate pile and documented in detail. Lastly, as a rule of thumb, the fewer items you have to pack – the easier the whole thing becomes. So, if you can, do a purge before you move, getting rid of any items that you are clearly not using anymore.
Create your own system and stick to it
The best thing you can do is come up with a system of your own. I will share the system that I use, but this is maybe not the ‘right’ way of doing it. It’s just one of the numerous ways you can go about doing it. Come up with your own as you will be most comfortable with it.
The first thing I do is create piles of items that will go together as a ‘unit’. This means that I will put small electronics on one pile and clothes on another. All furniture will be a pile for itself. Once I am done separating those piles, I will take out of each pile the things I will need the most. So a few shirts, my cell phone and my toaster (for example). These will go in the red box which will contain everything most important. The rest will be sorted into blue, green, yellow and orange – based on the importance. You always want the things you need the least to be at the very bottom. You will get to these last.
Which brings me to color coding. I am a visual person, and the easiest way for me to remember stuff is to remember it by its color. This is why color coding is precious to me.
I would color different boxes based on their priority and how much I need them. This is because sometimes it takes months to unpack, and I do not want to have to unpack things I have no need for. This is why some boxes will be red meaning that the contents of it are those that you need immediately. On the other hand, some boxes will be blue, meaning that there could go weeks before I actually need its content. This way, there is no mistake what gets unpacked first and what goes last.
